Last night after the numbers were announced, I heard possibly one of the wisest statements I have ever heard. A reporter was asking different people their opinions.
At one point, he turned to an African-American man I would guess to have been about 65 years old. He asked the man if he thought he would ever see an African American president. The answer that follows isn't verbatim (I wish I had recorded it.) but I remember the essence and most of the words. I want someone to send me the exact quote. This is close:
I never expected to see this in my lifetime, but wait! Barack Obama is not just a black man. His mother is white. So he is neither black nor white president. He is an American president.
Talk about unity! Wow. What a positive attitude. That is what this country needs now. As I said in an earlier post, United we stand, divided we fall. I would like to see this be just the beginning of total unity of blacks and whites, of democrats and republicans and of men and women.
We arent yet ready for all faiths, all colors, all sexual orientations and all classes to join in a circle and sing Cumbya, but its a start. We also arent going to see the economy all fixed in a year or the situation in Iraq solved by Christmas. Things will take time. I DO hope that something shows us going in the right direction soon. But we have to let the Obamas get settled in and take a much deserved break for a bit.
To all my republican voters. I hope my dreams become a reality. I hope that you will see some good in this over time. We all want the same things and I pray this works out for us all.
