Zap! Holy Ulnar, Batman!! First a Public Service Announcement from Cosmicrayola If any of you are interested, there is a site here. You can sign up to get emails about recalls. I personally like it because since joining their mailing list a few months ago, I have seen many recalls that could have involved me. Foods, electronics, toys, etc. The main reason Im telling you about it is that in the past few weeks, there have been several recalls on childrens toys. I have several readers with small children and this last recall really caught my eye. It is for Fisher Price Animal Farm Sounds. There is a small part that has shown to be a choking hazard with small children. Fisher Price just paid a $975,000.00 penalty for not recalling the toy sooner. Some of the recalls dont apply to me, but I only receive about 5 emails per week, so it isnt like its flooding my mailbox. Anyway, just thought Id post it. As for my tests, wowsa! That had to have been one of my weirdest trips to a doctor Ive ever had. Oh, and chailife you may have had the test. It wasnt an EMS, it was and EMG. I need to relearn the alphabet. I thought I knew what it was going to be like because several people told me ahead of time. I went in with all the facts. Here is a sampling of the things I was told by friends, family, and acquaintances. 1. They will use electrodes, they would use no needles. 2. They will use needles. 3. It will feel like sticking your tongue on an electric fence. 4. It is extremely painful. 5. It hurts like a SOB! 6. You will be fine to drive after. 7. You should probably have someone drive you home. 8. They will stick you about 5 or 6 times. Ok, this is how it went down. The first time, he used rounded sticks and applied pressure to various points. Then he had me try and push against his hand with my baby fingers. Then he applied pressure to each hand right between the thumb and the wrist (which almost got him a punch in the mouth. Holy pain, Batman!) Then the fun started. He inserted a needle one at a time into the muscle. He did that a total of about 12 times on one hand and then 4 or 5 on the other hand. He would start at the least current and work his way up in short jolts until he got a reading. Only twice did it cause pain and it was very doable pain. I cracked up watching my own hand spasm left and right. It was funny as hell One really good thing about going to this type of doctor. He told me exactly what was wrong there and then and what he was going to advise be done about it. Now, remember, when I went in, it was because of lots of pain in my thumbs and wrists and numbness on my little finger and ring finger. First of all, I have carpal tunnel syndrome, but very, very minimal so he doesnt want to do anything about that right now. The pain? Severe arthritis in the left hand, bad enough in the right. I am left handed, btw. Treatment is Ibuprophen morning and night. I didn't know this, but the inflamation, left unchecked can lead to more degeneration of the joint. So after hearing this, I assumed the numbness on my left baby finger and ring finger were associated with the carpal tunnel. Nope. I have Ulnar Nerve Entrapment. The Ulnar nerve runs alon the Ulna bone. He said Ive had it for quite some time because the muscle on the side of my hand is almost nonexistent. This explains also, why I cant open jars at all without my wonderful Pampered Chef opener. I never realized now much those two fingers mattered. He has me seeing the surgeon for a Ulnar Nerve Repositioning. He said the surgery itself is pretty easy. The weirdest part of this whole thing is that on the other side of my duplex here, lives Robin. Less than 6 months ago, she had this same surgery. I told her Im suing her because I caught it from her. Haha. So thats the story and Im sticking to it. Im okay with the surgery. Springs coming. I can use the rest. Later, Cosmic
