Just my Opinion I havent yet made an entry about the horrific tragedy at Virginia Tech. I didnt know anyone involved. If you want to believe all the news stories, you can come away with several opinions of the whole story. You have heard who is to blame. Blame has been extended to everyone from teachers, his counselors, his upbringing, the college, and others. Its commonplace, when grieving to assess the blame. To find a reason. To make sense of it all. There is no reason. There was no reason for the massacre at Columbine. There was no reason for the Uni-bomber. There was no reason for many other acts of the violence or the slaughter of the peoples that have lost their lives to the few. So where do you put the blame? I blame the one common denominator of all of these atrocities. Blame mental illness. You will not stop these acts by beefing up security. You cannot protect 100% of the people 100% of the time. You will not stop these acts by putting teachers, coaches and other laypeople in the position of being psychiatrists and mind readers. You cannot expect neighbors, co-workers, or the pizza guy to know when and where an unstable person may reach the end of their rope. And no, I dont believe you can expect everyone who had an idea that John Doe was strange or weird to believe that this would be the end result. We all, I think, have known someone in our lifetime that seemed a bit on the evil or odd side. That neighborhood kid that never fit in. The one that would sulk around with no friends. The one that was overweight and was the target of the school bully. If any of those kids were to do something like what has happened at Virginia Tech, would you blame yourself? Of course not. Though you may have had part of the puzzle, you didnt have it all. There is an epidemic in this country of mental illness. I think it is being overlooked. Its easy to just send someone to a counselor, feed them pills upon pills and make an appointment for the following week. We have become a country of thinking the little pink pill will make it all go away. For some illnesses, it does. Often it is just a band-aid. I believe that those who have done these deeds would have done so regardless of any treatment. Do I blame the psychiatrists? Not totally. They do not have a crystal ball either. I think these people were born with a break in their brains. I just think that unlike many illnesses, we have yet to identify the one that causes this. I think what we need to do is put some of these grant monies aside to aid in more research of the brain. These people were not all abused as children. Many of these types of killers were brought up in normal loving homes. They have normal loving parents and siblings. How could anyone know when sometimes there are no signs until the deed is done? Is it a genetic problem? Is it physiological? Environmental? Biological? Maybe it is something in our food? Water? I think we need to stop trying to just treat the illness and find the cause. 50 years or so ago, if you cut someone off in traffic, they would flip you the bird. Now they will shoot you. 50 years ago, if a woman was stressed out with husband and kids, she would talk to someone, find a solution and it would hopefully work itself out. Now she drives her kids into the lake. There are many diagnosiss out there and many treatments. There are no cures. We need cures and prevention. We need to find the cause of the anger and rage that is spreading throughout this country. There just has to be a reason for it. What happened at Virginia Tech is horrible. Unfortunately, it isnt a rarity these days. It is becoming all too common for people to reach the point of frustration that they simply lose their mind. These people are not common criminals. They are sick. They slipped through every checkpoint to reach their end. Others will continue to do so until we can seek out the cause. I cant believe that there is no commonality between all of these mass murderers that doesnt start at the brain functions, and yet, scientists want to go ahead with stem cell growth. I think we should fix the broken cells before we even think of using them to clone new ones. Ok, end of rant. Ill be back tomorrow with my normally silly self. Later, Cosmic
