A Learning Experience.

Terry and I watched Schindler's ListI know we are probably the last ones to watch it. This isnt a movie review per se, it is more of a session of Karen watched a move and guess what she learned. That was not meant to be flip. I am dead serious.

I dont know if I should say it is one of the best movies I have ever seen or one of the worse. Everyone has heard the stories growing up about the prison camps, the Nazis and the death camps. Being told this in history class or seeing bits of it in pictures via documentaries is one thing. Yes, you realize the horrors and you abhor the atrocities that were inflicted on the Jewish people but to see it played out as it happened was just overwhelming. I once said that I had never seen a movie that reached into the very core of my heart the way that Roots did. I now have.

I was never aware of how many millions were murdered. I thought it was more in terms of thousands. I also used to think my worse fear was death. I see now that there are far worse things than dying.

It put a lot into perspective.

I cannot fathom how it must have been. I cannot imagine having my children ripped out of my arms screaming. Nor can I imagine seeing my family and friends being murdered for no reason other than walking too slow or because a brutal guard was having a bad day or was simply bored.

What angers me is that most of those responsible for all of this are now dead or so close to death that, even if caught and tried for war crimes have already lived wonderful lives and had families in the United States and other countries. If the guard was only 20 in 1945, he would already be 63. Those that were in charge and ordered all these horrors to be carried out would all be munch older now. Even a life sentence would mean very little in terms of punishment.

I know many people have been treated horribly over the life of humanity and I am not writing this comparing the Jewish people to any others that have suffered unimaginable torture or oppression. I am just expressing my opinion about what I saw in this movie. It is so sad that so few of the original Jewish Pollacks still remain in Poland and that so many never returned to their homeland.

I was deeply moved, too, at the way the movie ended. The joining of some of the actual relatives with the actors that portrayed them. I was glad to see these people embraced this movie and gave it their blessing.

Again, I learned enough by watching this movie to know that every now and then I am going to real a little more and remove some of my own ignorance. Sometimes you just dont know how much you just dont know.
