Hubby's Little Adventure

Just when you think this fun filled holiday can't get any better, something comes along to prove you wrong.

Terry put off his shopping until today. He decided to go out after lunch and get it all done so he wouldn't have to go out in the rain tomorrow. His electric wheelchair would not fare well in the rain. There is no way to avoid it getting drenched in a rainstorm. The seat is foam filled, so if it gets wet, it will take days to dry and that is what he uses in the house. Sunny day, good. Rainy day, bad.

Today was 50 and sunny. He rides his electric wheelchair down to the garage, gets into his manual chair, goes to his car and gets in. He pushes the button on his car topper and it opens, drops down and he puts his chair on the hook. Push the button again and the chair folds, goes up top and into his carrier and closes. Off he goes. He called me around 12:30 from the yard to tell me he was leaving.

Fast forward 2 1/2 hours. I am at work when the phone rings and Terry is on the other line.

"You are never going to believe this." he said.

"If it's bad news, I don't want to hear it.", I answered.

Silence.

"Ok, go ahead and tell me."

"I'm still at Walmart"

I figured the car won't start and I will have to go and pick him up. No big deal. It's now 3:00 and we leave at 3:30. Charlene and I are the only ones working and I know she won't mind me leaving half an hour early.

"You aren't going to believe this." he says.

"So tell me, already", I answer.

"Well", he explain, "I came into the store and they have these electric carts with baskets you can use so you don't have to wheel yourself around, so I asked the guy at the front (The Greeter) if he would watch my wheelchair while I shopped and he said, "no problem" so I got my shopping all done and went and put my bags in the trunk of the car."

"So what's the problem????", I ask.

"Well, I got back and went to get into my wheelchair and it's gone."

"WHAT?????"

While I was talking with him, the Greeter was finding the manager. He showed up and Terry let me go, promising to call me right back. 15 minutes later, I called his cellphone and he answered. The manager had put out a message on the paging system that whoever took the wheelchair at the front of the store, to please return it, as it belonged to a customer. The manager then enlisted all the store employees to start isle by isle to track it down, hoping it was still in the store. Finally, right before 3:30, it was located, abandoned at the back of the store.

Since Terry has no legs and has to pull the chair right up to the seat of the car and then use a transfer board to slide over into the seat, he had taken off the foot rest when he first got it. For this reason, I am sure it must have been kids that decided to go joy-riding. There is no way an adult could have held their legs up off the floor while being pushed around.

All's well that ends well. He got home at the same time I did. No harm, no foul. So folks, if you go to Walmart, don't just watch out for those falling prices. Keep your eyes open for those rascally kids in their kidnapped wheelchairs.

Little brats. Stupid parents.

Later...

Later,
Cosmic
