Glad I'm home today I have said it once and I will say it again, �Laws were written to protect the guilty!� Do you know that in the US that a 30 year old man can try to lure a 13 year old girl into his car but if he doesn�t threaten her, touch her or stop her from walking away, it isn�t a crime? Well, I do now. First hand.
Yesterday, around 1:00pm, my granddaughter was walking home from the store. She was downtown with her mother and sisters watching the parade. After it was over, they left her to go to one of the shops. It is a small town here folks. She is 13. That is plenty old enough to be walking in broad daylight. Or one would think. As she was walking, a car pulled up beside her. They know a lot of people in this town so when Brit heard a �What�s your name and how old are you?� she turned to the man in the car and asked, �My name is Brittni and I�m 13, Do I know you?� He said �No.� She started to walk off. He hollered something else and she didn�t hear him. He said it again and she still kept walking. He pulled up to her again and said, �Get in the car and we can go to the park and smoke some cigarettes.� She gave one more reply over her shoulder, �I�m allergic!� and started running. As luck would have it, Lori had stopped at the video store and was driving back up the same street. She pulled over and Brittni jumped in crying. She told Lori what happened but also told her she had seen the car in the neighborhood of where friends of Lori�s lived. Lori flew over to the neighborhood and went to a friends house. Brittni described the man and the car. They knew him! Never ever get in the way of a woman protecting her young. Lori drove right up to the house and parked her car. She called the police. After explaining what had happened the woman on duty asked where she was. She gave them the address and the woman asked if that is where it happened. Lori told her �No, this is where he is now.� The police arrived and told Lori to go home. They didn�t want the guy to see her or Brittni. They took him to the station and called Lori to bring Brit down to fill out a report. The guy gave three different names to the police and at that point, they didn�t even know who he was. Obviously not a local boy. He was Jamaican. Brittni filled out the reports and they went home. It turns out that what he did is not illegal. But! And yes, folks, there is a but. Because he gave three different names, they were able to arrest him on Obstruction of Justice charges. The word is, he has already said he won�t be sticking around for court. He lives with a girlfriend in Lori�s old neighborhood. They had to let him go on bail or personal recognizance, whichever he did. Brittni is going back today to pick his picture out of some mug shots. At least it will be in his file. There is another �But.� Lori lived in that same neighborhood. The people down there look out for their own. Lori�s kids are like their own. I wonder how long it will or did take this guy to clear out his stuff and hit the road running. I am almost hoping that he hasn�t. A little smack-down justice suits me just fine. If he stays in their neighborhood, or even in this town, I wouldn�t be surprised if he gets sentence before he makes it out of town. And just for the record. It isn�t the first time he has done this. That time, he had gotten a 15 year old into his car. He dropped her at home the next day, drunk. From what we hear, she is known for being a run-a-round and making up stories. She couldn't remember if he she had sex or not. The police were never even called. At least this time, they were and this time there was an arrest.
