Music Makes the World Go Round

Boy do I feel old. I am so out of it, I dont know if I was ever even there! I read the following article on my Yahoo news page this morning. Humor me and read it:

'Built This City' Tops Worst Songs List

NEW YORK - Starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever.

Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.

The list, which appears in the May issue, includes songs by New Kids on the Block, Meat Loaf, The Doors, Lionel Richie, Hammer and The Beach Boys, among others.

Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

Starship lead singer Grace Slick says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc."

Rounding out the top 10: "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus; "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung; "Rollin'," Limp Bizkit; "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice; "The Heart of Rock & Roll," Huey Lewis and the News; "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin; "Party All the Time," Eddie Murphy; "American Life," Madonna; and "Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

Other songs on the list: Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" (No. 22); Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" (No. 30); Ricky Martins "She Bangs" (No. 39); Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" (No. 41); Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence" (No. 42); The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (No. 48); and Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (No. 50).

Blender and VH1's TV special "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs ... Ever" airs May 12.

I feel the need to comment.

1. I personally liked We build this city I thought it was a fun song and easy to dance to.

2. I like Loinel Richie, Meatloaf, Beach Boys and Huey Lewis. So hang me.

3. Achy Breaky Heart was waaaaay overplayed.

4. Dont Worry, Be Happy was one of my personal favorites. (That came out around the same time as Red, Red, wine. And I loved them both. Of course I was working a resort in Florida and had got caught up in the Jamaican, tropical fervor. It was all good Maan!)

5. I have always loved and will always will love Simon and Garfunkel. Sounds of Silence, Bridge over Troubled Water, Scarboro Fair and all the rest.

6. Ob-La-Di. Ob-La-Da, by the Beatles, I could have done without.

7. "Ebony and Ivory," by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder was a great song by two great writers/singers. It was a simple message with simple words that spoke volumes.

8. . And though I loved Celine Dions My Heart Could go On, after hearing it for the 138593473th time, I wish it would. Go on, that is. Actually, go away would be better.

I keep my radio on soft rock and the oldies. At work, we listen to everything from Dean Martin to Elton John. From Connie Francis to James Taylor. So all in all, I think Ill pass on the VH1's TV special "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs ... Ever" on May 12. I may be out of the new musical loop, but my old one fits just fine. MTV and VH1 can bite me!

I leave you with the lyrics of Ebony and Ivory. They just make so much sense.

Ebony And Ivory Live Together In Perfect Harmony
Side By Side On My Piano Keyboard, Oh Lord, Why Don't We?

We All Know That People Are The Same Where Ever You Go
There Is Good And Bad In Ev'ryone,
We Learn To Live, We Learn To Give
Each Other What We Need To Survive Together Alive.

Ebony, Ivory Living In Perfect Harmony
Ebony, Ivory, Ooh

We All Know That People Are The Same Where Ever you Go
There Is Good And Bad In Ev'ryone,
We Learn To Live and We Learn To Give
