All's Well That Ends Well

What a difference 15 hours can make. Terry went in for surgery at 9:30. I get a call at work at 11:50. The lady says, "Your husband is done his surgery. You can come get him."

"Excuse me?"

"Yes, you can come get him."

"I thought he was spending the night"

No, the doctor says he breezed right through it and he is being discharged."

Well slap my butt and call me a red-headed orphan! Breezed right through it! Well, hello! I am still in the I-know-something-is-going-to-go-wrong mode. I am sure, (knowing how RI hospital can be, that he probably hasn't even been preped yet.

Well ain't this special? My brother Pete dropped him off and left. It is his day off and I have no clue WHERE IN THE HELL HE IS! I cannot drive on 95, which is why I wasn't there with him. Also, he does not do surgery with me there. He says it stresses him out knowing I am outside waiting and he wants me home or at work. It's his way. Just so you don't think I don't care. So now I have a real problem here. RI Hospital is an hour from here, so it isn't like I could just call a friend and say, "Hey can you run over and pick up my husband for me." Well luckily, I called everyone I could think of and put out the word that if they saw Pete, to have him call me immediately. At 1:00 he called and said it wasn't a problem and he took off to get him. When he got there, Terry was still in recovery. They got home at 3:15 and I was a half hour after them.

Now it's one thing to send someone home after surgery on the same day, but get this. He has two incisions. Each is about an inch long. Each has about 6 stitches and staples and one has two tiney wires that go directly into his spinal column. He has a large gause bandage over all of this and a film of, all I can think of is plastic skin, over the whole thing. I asked when the visiting nurse was scheduled to come and change the dressing. THERE ISN'T ONE! This world reknown surgeon that prbably makes more in one day than I make in 5 years send him home right after surgery and guess who gets to change the bandage and move all these wires that are, I repeat DIRECTLY INTO HIS SPINAL COLUMN! These wires are thinner than a piece of angel hair pasta and they have tape wrapped around them. I am supposed to do this, right? Who does he think I am? Florence Fuckin Nightingale??????

Long story short. I changed it. I never cease to be amazed at what we are capable of when we have no alternative.

This, I might add is the temporary spinal cord stimulator. If he passes the test and it works, he will be told on the 12th when they will put in the permanent one. This one had the external wires and is attached to a machine about the size of a palm pilot that has up and down buttons to increase and decreas the intensity to deaden the pain. THe permanant one will have a batterypack inserted in his stomach and everything will be internal except the remote control. And you wonder why I hate this.

I can't thank you all enough for your prayers and words of comfort. I will get to you all one by one this week-end.

On a brighter note, Deja is totally fine and Linda in Arizona is fine, though she doesn't know if she still has a house.

I am going to make myself a bigg-assed rum and coke and sleep till noon tomorrow.

Later...

Later,
Cosmic
