Autumn of my Life.

This is the autumn of my life.

I am 51 and have seen my summer come to an end. I am in the autumn now. I think spring is from 1 to 30. Summer is from 31 to 50. Autumn is from 51 to 65 and winter is thereafter.

And just like the changes of the seasons, some things end while others begin. It isnt sad, it is just the way life is. You can either despise it or embrace it.

I choose to embrace it.

No longer do I have that monthly "curse" so I no longer worry about God-forbid, pregnancy.

Like the leaves changing color on the trees, the hair is turning gray, but I believe that mother nature does that because the gray softens the wrinkles. If you have ever seen a 50 year old with jet black hair and too much make-up, you can see what I mean. Those wrinkle scream out "Hey, Im getting old and cant deal with it!".

Hubby has a saying that I love. When we see an over 50 year old with black hair or brassy blonde hair and skin tight jeans, he comes out with, "Mutton dressed like lamb."

Now if you are one of those over 50 year olds that can pull it off, God bless you. Most cant. And just beware. If you look in the mirror and think you look hot, remember, the eyes are the first thing to go.

Unfortunately, life is not like the time zone. There is no daylight savings time that we can use to set our lives back a decade.

I have aches and pains I dont remember having when I was 40, but at least I wake up and feel them. It could be worse.

The autumn of our lives has other benefits too. Autumn, (sometimes earlier) can bring grandchildren, retirement and other perks.

Now when I hear children fighting and screaming, I can simply say, GO HOME!

I can enjoy cleaning the house and have it stay that way. (Well, for a few days anyway.)

I can plan meals and know the food will still be there when I want to use it.

I can go out without makeup wearing my sweats and not look unkempt. I just look like all the other Grammies at the market.

But on the other hand, when I chose to dress up, I still look pretty damn good.

Yes, the autumn is nice. It is crisp, cool and ever changing. It is a time to be selfish. Buy that TV you want. Take that week-end get-away. After all, there are no school clothes to buy, no allowances to be paid, no prom dresses or Drivers training to pay for.

Dont get me wrong. I enjoyed the summer of my life and never regretted any of it, but its time to move on. Time to settle into the Autumn of my life and enjoy all it has to offer.

Winter will come in another 15 years or so. In the meantime, now is the time to do as the squirrels do and store up. I must store up my memories to add to those of the past. Time to get in as much as I can so that when the time comes to sit and ponder, I have a whole library of the past to occupy myself.

I best get busy!

"Old age is not so bad when you consider the alternatives."
Maurice Chevalier
French entertainer (1888 - 1972)
