from the start.

Monday, Nov. 22, 2004 9:19 P.M.

All done!

Home at last. Well actually, we got home about 2 hours ago. What a day.

First and foremost, Terry is ok. Well as ok as can be expected.

We got to the hospital around 9:30 for his 11:30 surgery. I stayed until around 10:30 and he told me to go home. He had his book and I am only 10 minutes from the hospital. I had meds to pick up anyway, so I said ok, I would be back as soon as the hospital called to say he was in recovery..

I ran my errands and got home around 12:00. By 1:30 I was getting anxious. I called the hospital and was told they were running late and he didnt go in until 12:00 but he was still in surgery. This was supposed to be, according to the doctor, about a 40 minute deal. Wrong.

I got a call at 1:45 saying the surgery went fine, but that it was indeed cancer so they infused his bladder with mitomycin a chemotherapy drug. It fills the bladder and then they rotate the patient from 30 minutes on the back to 30 on each side and 30 on the stomach.

This really broke my heart. After almost 5 years in a wheelchair, Terrys legs dont flatten if he lays on his stomach anymore. Tendons and muscles shorten over time. They said he was a trooper though. This was done in recovery room. His Doctor said there was no need for me to come up yet because it would be at least 3:30 before he was taken back to ambulatory care. I went back at 3:15 and was there waiting for him when they brought him back. He was having severe spasms. Every 5 minutes. With each spasm, his face would get red and sweat would pour out of him. They gave him a total of 4 shots of Demerol and they didnt touch him.

The chemotherapy turned his urine a bright blue. The catheter had to stay in until it ran clear. That, it turns out is what was causing the spasms. He only had two after they finally took it out. Then he had to go on his own before they would let him leave.

He was sent home with 3 perscriptions. One Mega antibiotic (because of the Chemotherapy and risk of infection) one anti spasm and one for discomfort. I had to stop at the pharmacy to pick them up because he had to start the antibiotic tonight. We never got home till 7:00! After all that, he came home, took his meds, and threw up at 8:00. It is now 9:12 and he is on his second cup of coffee, doing his crossword and eating candy. Gotta love him. You have to love a guy who is too silly to realize he should feel like shit!

Later,
Cosmic
